Bird Cage Cat

Keeping a bird in a multi-pet house particularly those with cats and dogs isn’t an easy task. It requires training with consistency and patience, the process itself may take months, and you still may not be 100 percent sure if your furry companions understand that they are not supposed to hurt the little birdies. Of course, you can’t blame them for our cats and dogs view birds as prey, it is a difficult task to teach them to leave the birdies alone. However, what you can do is ensure that your feathered companion’s cage is proofed against these animals. Let’s have a look at some tips and tricks that can help protect your bird efficiently:

The first step is selecting the right cage that fits all requirements. If you are a first-time bird owner, here are tips on what you should look for in a quality bird cage:

The cage needs to be heavy and sturdy as if it’s light in weight your cat or dog can knock it over the floor injuring the bird or may open the cage door. Also, make sure the cage you buy is spacious for the bird; small birds should be able to fly in their cages whereas large birds must be able to exercise.

Placing the Cage

Suspend the cage from the ceiling to prevent it from cats and dogs. However, this is usually not possible with large birds; therefore, place their cages in an area where you may easily supervise it. You can also surround the bottom of the cage with an apron to keep your furry companions away.  Also, make sure it can be placed away from the furniture or curtains that provide access towards the birds.

Don’t place the cage next to an aquarium as there may be the risk of your bird falling and drowning in the water.

Locks are Necessary

Always look for a cage that has locks on the latches with these latches being bird-proof. These locks will help prevent both dangerous scenarios; protect your bird from breaking out of the cage or your cat from getting inside.

The spacing between Bars

The space between cage bars is crucial for your bird’s safety. Make sure it isn’t wide enough to allow your cat’s or dog’s paw to get inside the cage. But at the same time, the spacing should be sufficient to prevent the bird’s wings, head or beak from being stuck between the bars as that may cause panic. The bars should also have an appropriate thickness and not get bent otherwise it may create dangerous space for the cat or dog to get inside.

Provide Safe Spaces for Hiding

Arrange your bird’s toys, perches, and other accessories inside the cage in a manner to provide your bird places to hide in case the dog or cat approaches the cage.

Cage Covers

Also covering the cage at night time can help protect your bird from the curious furry companions and provide additional security.
